Christmas Fire Safety Tips for Your Marietta Home

12/24/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marietta West Christmas fire safety tips SERVPRO of Marietta West wishes you and your family a very merry and safe Christmas and holiday season!

The Christmas season just would not be the same without shimmery, sparkly lights illuminating homes making everything shiny and bright. When it comes to fire prevention and protection safety is not something we can take for granted. US fire departments responded to an average 770 home structure fires per year that began with Christmas decorations. A live Christmas tree burn conducted by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) shows just how quickly a dried Christmas tree burns with flashover occurring in less than one minute as compared to a well-watered tree, which burns at a much slower rate.

Keep your holiday merry and bright by making fire safety a priority during this holiday season. When planning and implementing your lighting design keep these holiday safety tips in mind to help you reduce the risk of property damage, injury or even death.

Fire Safety Tips for the Christmas Season

  • Before plugging in a set of lights examine the cord for damage. Throw away any worn out or damaged sets of lights.
  • Never overload a circuit. Too many decorations and lights can overload electrical outlets and can cause a fire.
  • Turn off lights and decorations before leaving the house or going to bed.
  • Keep your tree hydrated. Once a tree is dry, it can catch fire easily. Dried out trees should be discarded.
  • Inspect and dispose of any damage decorations.
  • Decorations are temporary, remove them after the holidays.
  • Avoid using candles when possible. Consider using battery-operated candles in place of traditional candles.
