Emergency Roof Tarping and Board-up in Kennesaw Georgia

5/24/2019 (Permalink)

If your roof looks like this, give SERVPRO of Marietta West a Call (770)428-5467!

Emergency Roof Tarping and Board-up in Kennesaw Georgia

There’s not much worst then a tree branch falling on your roof, except maybe having the tree branch fall in the middle of the night during a rainstorm and trying to deal with it by yourself. Don’t go it alone! Call your neighborhood restoration specialist at SERVPRO of Marietta West. We hope this type of event never happens to your home, but if it does know SERVPRO of Marietta West can help!  We have provided homeowners with roof tarping and board-up services at all hours of the day and night.

It is very important to secure your property after a storm causes damage to your home, particularly your roof. You should have the building’s structure inspected for safety and secure the property to ensure that no further damage will happen to your property. Leaving a hole in the roof means that rain and the elements could further damage your home and its contents.

Dangers of tarping your own roof!

Fall Hazards – Damaged roofs can have structural faults or weak points due to the damage to the roof. The roof should be inspected by trained professionals for strength and structural integrity before performing repairs on it. Climbing and walking on rooftops can incredibly dangerous. Preforming work without the proper safety equipment is at best foolish and could be against the law!

Electrical Shock – Many homes and buildings have all kinds of overhead powerlines and electrical wires running to or through the roof. Combining water and electricity is never a good idea and once a roofs structure has been compromised the chances for electrocution multiply. All power lines should be treated as “live” and trained professionals should be the only people allowed to touch or even work in close proximity to them.

Inclement Weather – Chances are the reason your roof has been damaged is due to a weather-related event. From hail and high winds, to trees or other structures damaging your rooftop. Mother nature can really cause some damage! Sometimes it can be hard to tell if mother nature is done dealing damage or if she is just taking a break and has more harsh weather to dish out. Don’t be fooled into climbing up on your roof only to get caught in a thunderstorm or tornado. Wait for all storm advisories to be lifted prior to inspecting, tarping, or repairing damages.

*There are many risks involved with climbing on the roof of any structure and SERVPRO of Marietta West advised you keep your feet firmly planted on the ground. Call the professionals when it comes to inspecting, tarping, and repairing your home or business’s roof. For more information about roof tarping visit our friends over at www.osha.com.

SERVPRO of Marietta West offers emergency board-up services just for this type of event. When your homes roof suffers damage in the middle of the night, call SERVPRO of Marietta West. We will come straight over, and get the roof boarded up and covered-up to protect your home from further damage.

Three Easy Steps to Remember When Your Toilet Backs-up or Overflows

5/20/2019 (Permalink)

When thing seem out of control and you need a helping hand, give SERVPRO of Marietta West! We'll bring back order and your peace of mind!

When disaster strikes, sometimes it hard to know what the first step toward getting things back to normal is. The trained professionals at SERVPRO of Marietta West can make it “Like it never even happened”. We’ve provided fast and reliable service to the Great Atlanta Area for over 30 years and are open 24 hours a day 7 days a week 365 days year, including all major holidays. No matter the time of night…No matter the size of the job…SERVPRO of Marietta West is ready for any disaster!

  1. Protect yourself from potentially harmful sewage – Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the structure once access to power distribution panel is safe from electrical shock. Do not enter areas that have sagging or falling ceilings. Technicians wear protective boots, gloves, Tyvek suits, and even respirators to protect themselves during a toilet backup. Not only does this prevent our techs from being harmed during the cleanup process, but it also helps prevent transferring contaminates to non-affected areas.
  2. Stop the source of water – In some toilet overflow cases this is simple as shutting off the water supply line to your commode. Most supply lines can be found at the base of your toilet and are very easily shut off by turning the knob connected to the water shut-off valve. The water can also be turned off at the water main. This method can be particularly helpful if you don’t know exactly where the water leak is coming from. This technique turns the water off to the entire structure and can be problematic because the residents will be unable to use any water fixture in the home or business until the water main is turned back on.Sometimes the toilet backup is result of clogged drain lines or pipes and can be cleared using a toilet plunger. In the event the blockage cannot be cleared with a household plunger, we strongly recommend you contact a trusted water restoration service provider like SERVPRO. Difficult obstructions may have to be cleared by trained professional using specialized equipment like a “drain snake”.
  1. CALL SERVPRO! SERVPRO can be on site within an hour in most cases. Until help arrives you can help prevent further damage. Removing water as soon as safely possible by using traditional methods like blotting with towels or mop and bucket. Take special care around color sensitive textiles like clothing, carpets, rugs, furniture and upholstery. Move sensitive valuables such as artwork, electronics, and documents to a suitable dry place while taking care not to spread sewage to unaffected areas. Use anti-microbial cleaning agents during the cleanup process to help prevent future mold growth.

Don’t go it alone…Call in the professionals from SERVPRO of Marietta West. Our trained mitigation crews have the experience and know-how to fix any size disaster. Don’t take our word for it though, check out what our satisfied customers have to say!

If you've experienced flood damage call SERVPRO of Marietta West (770) 428-5467. We offer 24/7 emergency service!

Flooding is a temporary overflow of water onto an area that normally is dry. Injury or death can result from failing to evacuate flooded areas, going into flood waters, or staying in flooded areas after water passes. As far as natural disasters go, floods are the most common natural disaster.

  • Floods result from rain, snow, storms, or even overflows of dams and other water systems.
  • Flash floods can develop quickly or slowly and can come with no warning.
  • Floods can damage buildings, create mudslides/landslides, and cause substantial disruption of transportation/resources

If you are under a flood warning, seek safe shelter immediately!

  • Do not walk, swim, or drive through flood waters. Turn Around, Don’t Drown! (Just six inches of moving water can knock you down, and one foot of moving water can sweep your vehicle away.)
  • Stay off of bridges over fast-moving water.

  • Evacuate if told to do so.

How to Handle a Fire Loss in Kennesaw GA

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Marietta West for commercial or residential water and fire restoration and cleanup (770)428-5467!

Whether it’s a fire in a home or commercial fire damage, the loss can be equally devastating. Home fires may be caused by many unexpected things such as an electrical fault or other anomalies in your home electrical connections. Gas leaks and other fuel energy appliances may also cause a fire in a home. Likewise, fire could start in business settings from an electrical fault, heating materials, or machines such as generators.

What happens after a devastating commercial or residential fire?

Here are the few things to keep in mind should you ever experience a fire in home or business.

Call the Fire Department!

This many seem like common sense, but it merits repeating. If your home or business is on fire immediately get to a safe place and call the appropriate authorities. In most cases this would be your local fire department. Here is a link to Cobb County’s Fire Department -www.cobbcounty.org/public-safety/fire- where you can more information of Kennesaw, Marietta, and Smyrna fire safety.

Do Not Rush Into the Building

Sometimes the fire may die down, and you think that the inferno is over, but it could flare back up without much notice. Whenever there is a fire in home or business, don't rush in side the premise. Hold back until the fire department or other fire professional indicates that is safe to renter the structure. It may be difficult to resist the urge to rush in to check on your valuables and important documents/credentials, but for safety purposes please only return to the building once it has been deemed safe to do so. Rushing into a building with smoke or even just poor air quality can suffocate you.

Secure Your Property & Contact Insurance Company

An important step on the way to recovery is securing your property (once it has been deemed safe to reenter the building by the fire department or other fire professionals). Some property may be salvageable and needs to be protected from further damage. Protecting the structure from the elements prevents most types of secondary damage and can reduce overall restoration costs. Securing the property also can prevent losses from looting and gives the property owner back a sense of control over his or her property.

This can also help you with the insurance company, as it will help with any forensic examination the adjustor or fire investigator may need to determine the cause of the fire and subsequent compensation. As soon as you have secured the site be sure to contact the fire department for a copy of the fire report. The fire report specifies all the necessary information about the fire including the time, casualties if any, date and the extent of fire damage.

Fire Cleanup Process After Fire Damage

You may want to contact a fire damage restoration company to help cleanup your home or business, especially in the event of excessive smoke damage or soot damage. Generally speaking, it is not advisable to assume you can handle the entire fire cleanup by yourself. Fire loss comes with severe smoke damage and excess soot damage. Restoring the air quality and cleaning the HVAC system for an entire building is an arduous task thus you may need a helping hand to do so. If the damage is quite small, you might be able to restore it by yourself by mixing trisodium phosphate and water to clean up some types of smoke damage. You can use a vacuum to further clean and to pull soot away from the surface by yourself. This may enhance the air quality in your building.

SERVPRO of Marietta West’s fire damage restoration experts can help you clean the soot damage quickly and with a whole lot less effort on your part. Smoke may corrode your walls and other non-damaged valuables since most smoke residue is acidic. Soot damage can also block your ventilation system resulting in poor air quality in your home or business.

It is important to start cleanup as soon as possible to regain normalcy and a sense of control. Cleaning up even a small portion of your home or apartment and even a commercial fire loss, can be very empowering and can boost your weary soul by giving you a great sense of accomplishment.

Six Tips on Protecting Your Kennesaw, GA Home or Business From Winter Weather

11/29/2018 (Permalink)

"If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a tempertature no lower than 55°F," says redcross.org

Winter has just begun...Are you prepared for the coming cold Kennesaw, Georgia weather?

Cold weather can have a massive impact on your home or business when you are not ready for it. SERVPRO of Marietta West wants you and your property to be prepared for winter in North Georgia. From freezing temperatures with damaging winds, to heavy rain or frozen sleet and snow, all can cause serious and expensive property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can make efforts to be prepared, which can help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help avoid costly damages due to winter weather conditions, consider taking the following precautions to protect your Kennesaw home or business before colder weather hits.

  1. Check your business or property for downed tree limbs and branches. Wind, heavy rain, ice, and snow can cause branches to fall. This could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  2. Roofs, water pipes, and gutters should all be inspected to help ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during the fall. Leaves and other obstructions can cause a damming effect if left to build up. This can lead to roof damage and/or allow water to get into the interior of the structure.
  3. Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate a potential flood hazard.
  4. Inspect all hand rails, stairwells, and entryways to address and correct potential slippery or hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  5. Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave cabinet doors open, allowing warm air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has out door faucets, consider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawlspace. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure it drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  6. Have SERVPRO of Marietta West complete an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no-cost assessment of your facility and provides you with a plan to get back in business faster following a disaster.

When winter strikes, call SERVPRO of Marietta West to strike back!

Smoke & Soot Cleanup in Marietta GA

10/22/2018 (Permalink)

You can see here where soot and smoke has damaged this homes walls and contents.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke & Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are mainly two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Marietta West will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Experts will arrive with high-tech, powerful equipment that will extract the water and minimize flood damage.

In the event of a home or commercial water loss please contact SERVPRO of Marietta West – (770) 428-5467 - or you can visit www.SERVPROmariettawest.com for more information on water damage.

It is best to seek out certified experts who are trained extensively to deal with flooding emergencies whether the water is in the home or if the water is in a business. They can also advise homeowners on how to handle mitigation of water damage while the tenants or owners wait for them to arrive. Below is a list that can help reduce flood damage and help manage fallout mitigation.

  • If possible, immediately stop the water at its source to reduce the water in the home or the water in the business and speed up water cleanup.
  • If it is safe to do so turn off all electricity and move all smaller electric device.
  • Pin up any furniture skirts, drapes, or tapestries that hang low or have contact with the floor to avoid water damage to the fabric.
  • Wash your hands after moving damaged belongings.
  • As much as possible, avoid walking on carpet.
  • Remove all moisture-sensitive, fragile belongings, anything of high-value, as well as items that could cause stains.
  • Move any furnishings that can be moved from the carpeted area of the home or place aluminum foil underneath furniture legs. This should help mitigation of the risk of long-lasting rust caused by flood damage.
  • Plan for a water damage restoration team to move furniture to already drying areas.
  • Avoid any/all possibility of electric shock to any living persons and pets. Do not use any electric devices until the emergency flood removal crew tells you it is okay. Do not use a shop or home vacuum to attempt water removal on from the property without cleanup experts onsite.
  • Do not turn on the heating, air conditioning, or fans in an attempt to speed the drying and cleanup process. Air movement may spread contamination if the flooding is at all sewage-related.

Powerful extraction and air movement gear is then brought into the home by expert cleanup crews to remove any presence of freestanding water. Water is then thoroughly removed from upholstery, carpet, and carpet padding. Then the drying by air movement with professional fans begins.

If flooding is particularly bad, carpet and carpet padding may be moved temporarily to assist with drying.

Water in a home can be an extremely expensive emergency if there is extensive flood damage. Water damage can be even more costly if there is water in a business that carries a large inventory. In order to prevent flood damage and water damage, it is important to contact professional cleanup crews that can speed up the drying process with water cleanup and air movement as soon as possible. The sooner water cleanup is completed water damage restoration can begin.

Five Things To Know About Mold In Smyrna GA

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

Smyrna GA gets balmy sometimes during its beautiful warm weather seasons. It is also humid and wet at times. Unfortunately, these conditions tend to give rise to humidity and where there is humidity there is the risk of fungal growth. Homeowners in Smyrna need to be aware of the problem of mold damage, and the difficulties of keeping mold away.

SERVPRO has much experience with mold damage in Smyrna GA. Our customers ask us many questions about mold, what it is, how it grows, and how best to prevent it from coming back. Here are five facts about mold damage that we would like to share with you.

1. Mold can grow almost anywhere if it has enough moisture and food. Moisture is key to fungal growth, so anywhere that is humid is a prime location for the spores to settle and grow. Mold also needs a food source – most organic materials work.

2. Mold is around us all the time. It is not a very pleasant thought, but in fact, invisible mold spores are present in almost all of nature. The spores settle anywhere that has good growing conditions and set to work growing a new colony.

3. There is no such thing as mold eradication. Customers often ask us if it is possible to eradicate mold. The answer is no; it is not feasible to remove fungus altogether because it is omnipresent. However, it is possible to discourage regrowth by removing water sources.

4. The visible part of the mold that you see with your naked eye is called the mycelium and is made up of many tiny thread-like cells called hyphae. The hyphae release spores which travel to other locations within your home and set up new colonies.

5. You can do a lot to discourage mold growth by keeping your home dry and well ventilated and fixing any leaks or damp patches as soon as you find them.

SERVPRO’s IICRC-certified technicians are on hand for mold remediation in your home. We use a combination of scrubbing, wiping, and HEPA vacuuming to remove visible fungus. We also have negative air machines and dehumidifiers on hand to remove contaminated air and lower humidity.

Mold Myth Basics

10/17/2018 (Permalink)

If you have more questions about mold damage or have mold damage, please don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Marietta West today - (770) 428-5467!

Its name evokes images of green rot. Mold is a menacing pollutant existing naturally in the environment. But it's the last thing you want growing in your home.

Like most people, you probably know that indoor mold ruins homes and threatens health. And you might agree that the first step to eliminating mold is locating its sources.

But do you know where to look for mold? Or even that using a popular disinfectant to clean it can do more harm than good? Chances are, you've been duped by these mold myths that should be laid to rest:

  • A Clean Home is Mold-Free.

A dirt-free home is no guarantee against mold infestation. Mold thrives in closets, dark corners, and drywall, a common construction material in homes today. Its microscopic spores sail through the air, so you can't see them or know where they land.

  • Your home has no moldy odors.

It's true that gasses produced by mold give off a musty odor. But it's false to assume that having no odor means your home isn't infested. Not all molds produce smells. And if mold is lurking in a basement, its smell doesn't enter the air you normally breathe. It's there, and you never knew it.

  • Your home's basement never floods.

Wet basements are a major source of mold. But they're just one of many in your home. Other mainsprings for mold are humidifiers, leaky pipes, dryers that vent indoors, bathrooms and cooking areas that aren't ventilated, even carpets in a basement.

  • Bleach can remove mold.

A powerful disinfectant, bleach wipes away mold on glass, metal, or plastic surfaces. But while its chlorine component doesn't penetrate to the sources of mold in drywall and wood, the water contained in bleach does. And--you guessed it--that water lingers beneath the surfaces, providing more than enough food for mold to grow.

10 Things You Should Know About Mold

10/10/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marietta West and the fine people over at the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) would anyone that encounters mold in there home or business to know the following

  1. Exposure to mold can be contribute to negative health effects and should be avoided if at all possible.
  2. The way to control indoor mold is by managing the moisture level of the environment; eliminating all mold and mold spores in an indoor environment is impractical in most cases.
  3. If mold is a problem in your home or school, you must clean up the mold and eliminate sources of moisture.
  4. Fix any and all water leaks or water problems to inhibit mold growth.
  5. Reduce indoor humidity (to 30-60%) to decrease mold growth by:
    • Venting bathrooms, dryers and other moisture-generating sources to the outside
    • Using air conditioners and de-humidifiers
    • Increasing ventilation
    • Using exhaust fans whenever cooking, dishwashing and cleaning
  6. Clean and dry any damp or wet building materials and furnishings within 24-48 hours to prevent mold growth.
  7. Clean mold off hard surfaces with water and detergent, and dry completely. Absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, that are moldy, may need to be replaced.
  8. Prevent condensation: Reduce the potential for condensation on cold surfaces (i.e., windows, piping, exterior walls, roof, or floors) by adding insulation.
  9. In areas where there is a perpetual moisture problem, do not install carpeting (i.e., by drinking fountains, by classroom sinks, or on concrete floors with leaks or frequent condensation).
  10. Molds can be found almost anywhere; they can grow on virtually any substance, providing moisture is present. There are molds that can grow on wood, paper, carpet, and foods.

Improve Your Air Quality | Duct Cleaning Can Help!

10/2/2018 (Permalink)

The ventilation system is often  the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, but you can help change that! Inspecting the duct work in your facility or home should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

A routine part of SERVPRO of Marietta West's service is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and duct work clean can potentially extend the life-span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save your money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary, SERVPRO professional's will inspect your HVAC system and dust work and make recommendations about the best way to address any indoor air quality concerns. This inspection can help save you money and provide peace of mind on the health of your HVAC system and duct work.

In some circumstances, such as after a fire, smoke, or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential par of the cleanup process. In these cases, SERVPRO of Marietta West can often restore the HVAC system and duct work to pre-damage condition.

If you have a fuel-burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends they be inspected for proper functioning and be serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

The SERVPRO Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost-effective. Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Marietta West uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine duct work and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

  • The process begins by using patented equipment, including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97% of the particles in the air stream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

For more information on duct cleaning or to schedule an appointment contact SERVPRO of Marietta West (770) 428-5467

Generator Safety

9/28/2018 (Permalink)

If you have a generator on hand for power outages during severe weather, follow the safety tips below from the American Red Cross:

  • Never use a generator, grill, camp stove, or other gasoline, propane, natural gas, or charcoal-burning devices inside a home, garage, basement, crawl space, or any partially enclosed area.
  • To avoid electrocution, keep the generator dry and do not use in rain or wet conditions. Operate it on a dry surface under an open canopy like structure, such as under a tarp held up on poles. Do not touch the generator with wet hands.
  • Open doors and windows or using fans will not prevent carbon monoxide (CO) buildup in the home. Although carbon monoxide can't be seen or smelled, it can rapidly lead to full incapacitation and death. Even if you cannot smell exhaust fumes, you may still be exposed to carbon monoxide. If you start to feel sick, dizzy, or weak while using a generator, get to fresh air immediately.
  • Install carbon monoxide alarms in central locations on every level of your home or property and outside sleeping areas to provide early warning of accumulating carbon monoxide.

Severe Weather Safety

9/28/2018 (Permalink)

Severe weather can happen any time, anywhere. Each year, Americans cope with an average of the following intense storms:

  • 10,000 severe thunderstorms
  • 5,000 floods or flash floods
  • 1,300 tornadoes
  • 2 land-falling deadly hurricanes

Approximately 98 percent of all presidential declared disasters are weather-related, leading to around 650 deaths per year and nearly $15 billion in damage. Knowing your risk of severe weather, taking action, and being an example are just a few steps you can take to be better prepared to save your life and assist in saving the lives of others.

Know Your Risk.

The first step to becoming weather-ready is to understand the type of hazardous weather that can affect where you live and work, and how the weather could impact you, your business, and your family. Check the weather forecast regularly, obtain a NOAA Weather Radio, and learn about Wireless Emergency Alerts. Severe weather comes in many forms, and your shelter plan should include all types of local hazards.

Take Action.

Take the next step in severe weather preparedness by creating a communications plan for your home and business. Put together or purchase an emergency kit. Keep important papers and valuables in a safe place.

Be an Example.

Once you have taken action to prepare for severe weather, share your story with co-workers and family and friends on Facebook or Twitter. Your preparedness story will inspire others to do the same.

October Is Fire Prevention Month

9/28/2018 (Permalink)

October is fire prevention month, a perfect time to examine emergency preparedness plans for your home and business, including your fire escape plan. Do you have a fire escape plan? Have you changed your smoke alarm batteries within the last year?

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) designates a week each October to focus on fire prevention awareness. The 2018 theme is "Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware. Fire can happen anywhere." This theme hopes to create awareness in the steps neccessary to reduce the cance of a fire and how to react in the event a fire does happen. The National Fire Protection Association states the folloning:

  • "LOOK" for places fire could start. Take a good look around your home. Identify potential fire hazards and take care of them.
  • "LISTEN" for the sound of the smoke alarm. You could have only minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Go to your outside meeting place, which should be a safe distance from the home and where everyone should know to meet.
  • "LEARN" two ways out of every room and make sure all doors and windows leading outside open easily and are free of clutter.

In addition to being physically and emotionally draining, home fires are typically financially taxing. This is where SERVPRO of Marietta West can help lift the burden of both emotional and financial stress. • Be prepared to provide a general description of the damages (a list/photographs of damaged or lost items are helpful in most cases).
    • Do not through away items you plan to claim without discussing it with your agent or adjuster.
    • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
    • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
    • If electricity is off, empty freezer/refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
    • Leave system off until a trained professional can check the system;Change HVAC filters once system has been checked.
    • Don't attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces without first contacting trained professional.
    • Don't attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting trained professional.
    • Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV set, radio, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water with out first consulting an authorized repair service.
    • Do not consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water, as they may be contaminated.
    • If ceiling is wet, do not turn on ceiling fans. Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.
    • Don't send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.

Why Kennesaw Restaurants Are More Susceptible to Water Damage than Other Businesses

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Call the pros at SERVPRO Marietta West! Performing emergency water restoration services for all of Kennesaw and Marietta sense 2005!

Restaurants typically have the highest water consumption of any class of business, leading not only to increased bills but also greater risk of water damage.

Kennesaw restaurants experience small-scale water damage on a much more frequent basis than other local companies, causing minor but still troublesome headaches for the unprepared. While SERVPRO can help with mitigation and restoration services to keep the real impact on your business to a minimum, you should be prepared for the most common issues you may find yourself facing.

Clogged Drains
Whether it is in the restroom or the kitchen, clogged pipes and drains have the potential to cause a lot of water damage to your Kennesaw restaurant very quickly. While establishments with timed faucets are typically resistant to these disasters, troubles can still arise due to carelessness or malfunction. Overflowing sinks and drains spill high volumes of water on the floor, causing permanent damage to flooring materials if not properly drained or cleaned up. Should this issue arise, be sure to shut the water off quickly to prevent further harm.

Burst or Torn Water Lines
Whether the water line is in the structure or an appliance, rips, and holes in pipes and tubes commonly create uncontrollable disasters. While aging kitchen equipment tends to be at the greatest risk, accidents can happen to even the newest and most premium appliances. Be sure to have sealant on-hand to patch up leaks quickly, and contact SERVPRO or an equipment technician as needed for further fixes.

Flooding
Serious flooding can happen to restaurants either from natural disasters or major water leaks, such as a busted water main. When this happens, a fast call to SERVPRO is critical, as calling us without delay ensures that we can find and repair the issue in a timely fashion and mitigate as much damage as possible. These cases typically develop into lengthy, more challenging restoration processes, especially if we experience additional delays in the mitigation process. Our ERP, Emergency READY Profile Plan can help prevent, or at least mitigate, fire or water damage from closing your restaurant.

SERVPRO of Marietta West helps local businesses to survive and overcome even the worst disasters and damages. To enlist our aid, call us around the clock at (770) 428-5467.

Water Resulting in Mold Growth Happens Fast

6/13/2018 (Permalink)

When water intrudes into your property, mold growth can start in as little as 48 hours.

Consider the following mold facts:

  •  Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  •  Mold spores are microscopic, float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  •  Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce toxins harmful to humans and pets.
  •  Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise the mold may return.
  •  Mold often produces a strong, musty odor, and that odor can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  •  Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

Are the people cleaning up your property certified in mold cleanup?

6/8/2018 (Permalink)

What Does It Mean for a Company To Be Certified in Mold Cleanup?

When you have a mold problem in your Kennesaw, GA home, you need to act quickly. If you don't already have a residential mold remediation team, you need to find a reliable company. As you search for a professional, you may find that some companies are certified mold cleaners while others aren't. Is this certification simply justification for a company to charge you more money? Actually, working with a certified mold remediation crew can be a big benefit for you.

Expert Knowledge
A mold certification from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Cleaning means the professionals have proven knowledge of mold remediation and cleanup. The crew would have passed a test proving they understand mold cleanup, which encompasses the following:

• How to contain a colony
• How to meet legal requirements
• How to use safety gear to reduce contamination
• How to find hidden mold growth

When you work with a certified team, you can feel confident that they will know how to get the job done correctly.

Insurance-Provider Approved

Not only can you feel confident working with a company that has certified mold knowledge, but your insurance provider may also feel better about the situation. Depending on your policy, some of the mold damage remediation may be covered by your insurance. This means you need to follow the stringent guidelines set up by the provider to ensure the work can be reimbursed. Insurance providers prefer working with companies that are certified in mold cleanup because they know the right steps are being taken to address the fungus growth.

State Approved

Some companies in this industry may work without a proper state license. This may allow them to charge less money for the remediation, but it also means you may be legally and financially liable should anything go wrong. In order to become certified, a company has to be properly licensed.

Going through the cleanup process after discovering fungus growth can be hard. When you work with a certified mold expert, however, you can feel confident that you're getting sound advice and service.

What to Do After a Commercial Fire Disaster in Marietta, GA

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

If your commercial facility is in need of fire restoration call SERVPRO of Marietta West (770) 428-5467

A sudden fire in your business or commercial premises can be shattering and overwhelming. It may set you back in terms of infrastructure and revenues.

However, even in the face of such disaster, all is not lost. It is possible to restore your business premises back to its original state through commercial restoration services.

Commercial restoration is preferred to rebuilding as it saves you time and resources. You won’t have to buy most of your furniture and equipment again. Instead, a simple cleaning and a little restorative work should have them looking new and fresh.

Even when the fire damage is extensive, your property can still be salvaged through commercial restoration.

5 Things to Do After Commercial Fire Damage

What do you do after the fire trucks have left and you’ve ensured the safety of all your employees? What is the roadmap to normalcy?

1. Protect Yourself Before Entering the Building

If the fire department has allowed you to re-enter the building, make sure that you wear a mask to prevent smoke and other hazardous gases from entering your lungs.

It is also recommended to wear gloves to protect your hands from injuries and other dangerous materials.

2. Prevent Further Damage

Even after the fire is put out, damage can still continue. The water left behind by the firefighters can still destroy your furniture and other commercial items as well as promote mold growth.

If possible, remove all undamaged items such as documents, computers, and equipment from the building to a secure place to prevent them from further damage or possible looting.

3. Collect the Damage Information for Your Insurance

Your insurer will ask for a detailed list of inventory for all the damaged commercial items. You should, therefore, take clear photos and videos of the damage and make a list of all the destroyed items and structures. This will help you to get the most out of your insurance coverage while providing proof.

4. Call a Professional Commercial Restoration Expert in Marietta, GA

After a fire disaster, the fastest way to get your business up and running again is hiring a professional restoration company to clean and restore your building.  Here are the steps taken to restore your business premises:

  • Damage assessment: This involves examining the extent of the damage. You will receive a comprehensive report and plan on commercial restoration after the assessment.
  • Elimination of smoke odor: After a fire disaster, your commercial premises will need a breath of fresh air. With the use of top-of-the-line industrial dehumidifiers and the best air movers, restoration experts will completely eliminate the smoke odor.
  • Soot removal: After a fire, the walls and ceilings of your building are likely to be covered in soot. Removing soot from surfaces on your own can be daunting. Restoration experts have the right products and tools for the job. Not a single stain will remain. When soot is properly removed, it will help prevent the growth of mold after the restoration process.
  • Repaint, Repair, and Restore: Finally, the restoration company will repaint the walls and make quick fixes to get your commercial building operational again.

5. Initiate an Arson Investigation

If you don’t know the cause of the fire, it is always recommended to conduct an arson investigation to determine what or who started it. This information can be vital during the insurance claims process.

And if the fire was started by a particular person intentionally or due to negligence, you can press charges and get help in property repair and restoration costs.

How Storms Damage the Roof of Your Business in Smyrna GA

5/25/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marietta West is here after any size storm to make your home or business "like it never even happened"

The roof of your commercial facility or business is important. A well-maintained roof promotes energy efficiency and protects the building from the elements. When the roof withstands damage, the integrity of the building is affected. If a storm damages your roof, SERVPRO of Marietta West is the company to call for cleanup and restoration.

Surveying Your Roof After a Major Storm

Commercial and residential property owners should have their roof inspected after major storms. High winds as well as heavy rains and hailstones can damage a roof in many ways. They can cause shingles to blow off individually or in full patches. Tree limbs can fall onto the roof to leave a hole in the structure. We do not advise you to climb onto the top of the building on your own because of the high elevation and steep incline of most roofs. If you believe that your property has been damaged by a storm, you should contact a professional for an assessment.

What We Can Do to Recover and Restore Your Property

Our staff is highly trained in property damage restoration. SERVPRO’s Corporate Training Facility ensures we are always up to date on the best techniques to get your home or business back in shape after a storm. Regular IICRC industry certifications, means we have the knowledge as well as the equipment to restore your property. We clean the damage the storm left behind, and this includes on the interior or exterior of your building.

Severe weather is unfortunately common in the North Georgia area, and it can cause significant damage in a very short period of time. SERVPRO of Marietta West is available to respond to requests immediately after a major storm. We can begin the restoration and cleanup process quickly so that you can more easily move past the current issue and protect your property.

Protect Your Home From Water Damage When Your On Vacation

5/21/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Marietta West (770) 428-5467

Lots of things can go wrong in your home while you’re on vacation, most commonly leaks and water damage. Read our steps below to learn how to help prevent and reduce the risk of water damage when you’re away:

Check for Leaks

Before you leave on vacation, be sure to check around your house for any leaks. Pipes under sinks, your water heater, anything resembling rust, cracks, or other damage. It’s important to check the seals around your windows and the exterior of your home as well. If you find any leakage, be sure to fix it right away so everything can be repaired and in good condition before you leave.

Inspect Appliances

Important appliances such as your dishwasher, washer/dryer, and refrigerator are all connected to your home by hoses. If these hoses are damaged in any way, they can cause major water damage to your home. Inspect your appliances and, if needed, replace their hoses prior to leaving on vacation.

Clean Your Gutters

Cleaning leaves and other debris out from your gutters before taking a vacation is an easy way to prevent potential blockage and build up. To learn more about the advantages of clean gutters, click here.

Turn Off the Water

Whenever you leave your home for an extended period of time, it’s important to turn off the water main and make sure the pipes are completely drained. This will stop any water from continually leaking in your home while you’re away. Simply run the water and flush your toilet after you turn off the water.

Have Someone Check on Your Home

Coordinate to have someone come over and check on your home while you’re away. Having a friend, neighbor, or family member keep an eye on your property can help keep it in good shape, and they can notify you immediately if something goes wrong.

With these tips, you can truly enjoy your vacation with the peace of mind that your home is safe from any potential water damage that could occur in your absence. If your home does suffer from water damage, call our team at SERVPRO of Marietta West. We can help remove, repair, and restore any damage to your home.

Mold in Kennesaw, Georgia

5/14/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Marietta West at the 1st sign of mold (770)428-5467

Mold remediation has increased throughout Georgia. Energy-efficient buildings, faulty construction, increased plumbing, and public awareness are all reasons of why mold has threatened properties.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

How SERVPRO addresses water damage in your Kennesaw home or business

4/30/2018 (Permalink)

Water damage can come from many different sources, with varying intensities, danger levels, and reach of damage. Ultimately, many different objects, surfaces, and materials in a home can suffer water damage from the same event, and many homeowners question how a company such as SERVPRO of Marietta West handles a comprehensive water damage cleanup job. In this blog post, you'll learn about some of the ways our technicians control and repair water damage in local residences.

Identifying the Source and Water Type

Before all, water damage must be correctly defined by water type and source. Did it come from a storm or flood, or was it a pipe burst? There are also different types of water, typically categorized as either clean, gray, or black. Each one with different safety and cleanup protocols outlined by the IICRC. If necessary, our crew will work to stop the water flow as quickly as possible, to avert further damage to your home.

Surveying Damage and Mold

After we understand what type of damage we're dealing with, our technicians search the home visually and with moisture detection equipment to find out what objects have been affected, and what else needs to be done. Additionally, we look for signs of mold growth, which often takes priority in a cleanup operation.

Furniture and Water Removal

The next step is to remove all furniture from affected areas, and then pump out water if necessary. We use industrial-grade machinery to pump water from the interior to the exterior of the home, with either a portable or a truck-mounted pump.

Drying and Odor Treatments

At this point, we bring out more heavy machinery to begin drying and deodorizing the affected area, to make sure no more damage or mold growth occurs and any bad smells are removed.

Carpet Removal and Final Cleaning

In many cases, some or all of the carpeting in a room will need replacing. We make sure to evaluate carpeting carefully for moisture so as not to incur extra expenses. Sometimes, a cleaning may only be necessary, particularly when water damage is contained early on. After that is done, final cleanup and sanitization are done on walls and objects, and furniture is brought back into the home or rooms affected.

SERVPRO of Marietta West employs certified and well-trained technicians who are experienced with all kinds of water damage restoration and cleanup jobs. If you need our services for any type of water damage to your home, call us at (770) 428-5467 for 24/7 emergency service.

What To Do During a Flood Event in Kennesaw, GA

4/9/2018 (Permalink)

Storms and inclement weather can bring wind damage, heavy rain, and flooding that can devastate any business in a matter of minutes

Flood waters won't stop SERVPRO of Marietta West

Rains are coming...

Spring showers can often lead to flooding conditions in North Alabama. These tips will help reduce the impact spring floods that my happen on your property.

Watch for Pooling Water

Look for places around your property where water pools, and channel it away from buildings. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and they are directing water as intended.

Maintain Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump, check to be sure it is operational before water starts rising. Consider a back-up generator to ensure your pump works when you need it most. Contact your insurance agent to add coverage in case your sump pump fails.

Raise Storage Goods

Use shelving and/or pallets to keep storage items off the floor to reduce the impact of small floods. In many situations, raising boxes just a few inches will be enough to keep storage goods above the water line.

Cut Power if Necessary

As rising water approaches the level of electrical outlets, you risk having a live current flow through all the water. Cut the power if you can safely do so without standing in water. Otherwise, evacuate and contact an electrician to cut the power before you go back in for recovery.

Keep Storm Drains Clear

If you see water pooling around a storm drain, the drain may be clogged with debris. Clearing the debris will help keep the water flowing away from your neighborhood.

Be Aware on the Road

Be careful when driving during spring storms, especially when you hear flash flood warnings. Never drive into fully submerged roadway. The water surface will be at the same level as the pavement you can see. This view can deceive you into thinking the water is shallow because you cannot see how the road dips under the surface.

Act Fast

When a flood happens, you need to act fast to dry out any wet items, particularly structural materials like walls and flooring. Call SERVPRO® of Marietta West (770) 428-5467 to extract water and mitigate any mold growth. Our franchise professionals have the training and experience to make flood damage “Like it never even happened.”

Why You Should Tarp & Board-up Your Marietta Property After Fire Damaged

3/7/2018 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Marietta West (770) 428-5467 Water Extraction - Fire Remediation - Mold Mitigation

SERVPRO Can Help Provide Services to Protect Your Commercial or Properties

For some cases of fire damage in Marietta, we may recommend employing a boarding and tarping service to protect your home from further damage. While these services are not required for all mitigation and restoration projects in the aftermath of a fire, in some instances, they can be an essential step to keep your home in shape and prevent thousands of dollars of additional damages from happening.

Why Use Board and Tarp?

SERVPRO technicians can put up a sheet or two of plywood and some plastic to quickly protect your structure from absorbing more damage from external sources like wind and rain. However, we do partner with companies that have full resources to do large-scale buttoning up. This can help prevent water issues on top of the fire damage already in your Marietta home. Without these services, many homes are left vulnerable to the effects of rain, wind, and debris from the outside. While setting up these countermeasures are being set up we can go about our business of cleanup and restoration. By working in tandem, we can mitigate damages and look out for you, our client, and your best interests.

When Does SERVPRO Help Set Up These Services?

Typically, a small board up and tarp over holes in the home's exterior immediately after assessing the situation when our mitigation team arrives on the scene can also add to the safety and security of the structure. We also want to establish cleaning proceedures following IICRC guidelines for fire and smoke restoration as soon as possible.

What Can Happen Without Boarding and Tarping When Necessary?

Without anything to fill gaps opened up in your home's exterior by fire, rain, wind, and other weather effects can work their way into your home and cause additional damage to any and all exposed surfaces. These effects can cause thousands of dollars in additional damage and significantly complicate our work in the home, so we at SERVPRO make it a priority never to let that happen. There is plenty to do with extracting any water from the firefighting efforts along with eventually controlling odor problems that accompany fires.

SERVPRO of Marietta West is a locally-owned franchise with national resources to help take care of your home in a time of crisis. Call us at the first sign of fire damage at (770) 428-5467.

Understanding Water Types

2/23/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marietta West "Like it never even happened." (770) 428-5467

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup.

There are three types of water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous. Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

    • Shut off the wate source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.
    • Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribuion panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.
    • Remove as much excess water as possible by mopping and blotting. Wipe excess water from wood furniture after removing lamps and tabletop items.
    • Remove and prop up wet upholstery cushions to allow more even drying.
    • Move any paintings, art objects, computers, documents and other valuable items that may be sensitive to moisture to a safe place.
    • Do not leave books, newspapers, magazines or other colored items on wet carpet or floors as they may cause staining.
    • Do not use your household vacuum cleaner to remove water as there is potential for electrical shock or causing damage to the vacuum cleaner.
    • Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet; do not enter rooms where ceilings are sagging from retained water.

Damage from Contaminated Water

    • Avoid all contact with sewage and items contaminated by sewage. Wash your hands thoroughly if you come in contact with contaminated items.
    • Do not walk through contaminated areas, as you could spread damage to unaffected areas.
    • Do not turn on the HVAC system if there is a possibility of spreading contaminated air.
    • Do not use household fans to dry the structure;air flow could spread contaminants.
    • Discard any food and/or products for personal hygiene and cleanliness if exposed to the contaminated areas.

The Dangers of Mold & The Need For Mold Removal Services

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Scientists have revealed that there are more than 1000 types mold that can breed in homes and buildings. If you are wondering why you should be concerned about the mold situation in your home, you’d be interested to note that on average, most people spend 70% of their time indoors. This means that you can easily be affected by exposure from mold damage, and smelly odor. Mold in home should not be taken lightly; mold removal needs to be sought from professional companies. Mitigation and deodorization of the mold damage is much easier than letting the situation get out of control.

To appreciate the need for mold removal services or commercial mold damage expertise, you need to understand the dangers of mold. If the mold in the home is visible, then the situation is already bad. However, the tricky bit about mold in home and fungus is that in most cases it is not visible. However, it could still be seriously affecting your health and that of the family.

Mold requires a host surface to grow on. Mold and fungi may lurk in places such as kitchen cabinets, walls and on bread. In fact, the green stuff often seen on bread is a cluster of networks of mold. This type of mold is visible to the naked eye, but most of the other types are not. These “un-clustered” types are usually in the air. This means that mold, and fungus are very hard to spot. In light of this, it is important to conduct a mold inspection check. Commercial mold damage companies have specialized tools to spot the mold in home and conduct mold removal, remediation and deodorization to deal with the smelly odor.

Mold also live off humid and warm environments just like other organic matters. These places include old newspapers, window sills, bathroom walls, wall-paper, ceilings and leather jackets. The same case applies to mildew which is a type of fungus or mold. Mildew also lurks in musty basements, shower walls and other places with high moisture. Mold, mildew, and fungus find a way into homes through doors, carpets, windows and walls. Mold spores can also be carried and dispersed into the environment through pets, shoes, and clothing.

If unattended, the mold situation can bring about a smelly odor. For this, mold damage professionals conduct deodorization to musk the smell and improve the indoor air quality. Most home owners ignore the mold, fungus and mildew removal on the argument that small amounts of these microorganisms cannot hurt. However, mold replicates and grows rapidly. When it gets worse, it leads to a serious hazard.
Mold remediation should therefore not be taken lightly. Mitigation and mold removal services need to be sought immediately.

Mold removal services include deodorization, remediation, and mitigation. Commercial mold damage companies have the equipment, technology, and expertise to conduct thorough mold removal for mold in home and mold in business. It is a health risk to allow for mold to get out of hand, hiring mitigation services and improve the quality of air in your home.

How To Decide When To Call In The Pros To Clean Up Water Damage

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Water damage in your home can occur from a number of different sources ranging from outdoor flood damage, roof damage that lets in precipitation to interior causes such as a burst pipe or overflowing washer causing flood damage. Obviously, the longer water sits, the more water damage it is likely to cause. In addition, damage mitigation of water that comes from a clean interior source such as a pipe or washing machine is also easier than damage mitigation from flooding or a sewer issue. In some cases, whether it is water in your home or water in your business, you absolutely want to call in professionals to deal with the issue. However, there are some types of water damage restoration - particularly if it is water in your home - you might want to tackle on your own. For water in your business, there is the additional issue of valuable electronics, which are more susceptible to water damage and require different restoration and mitigation techniques. For water in your home, however, here is brief overview of how drying and water cleanup should occur.

  • Lift furniture

Once you have cleaned and evacuated the majority of the water, your best friends in the final stages of water cleanup, restoration and drying are air and heat. For restoration and damage mitigation in floors in particular, getting the best airflow possible means getting furniture up above the surface of the floor so as not to block the airflow. In addition, you will also want to protect the legs and lower surfaces of furniture from wicking up the water and leaving stains once it dries. Drying out carpeting and flooring is also important and lifting furniture will aid in the drying process.

  • Remove Baseboards & Drill Large Holes In Bottom Of Drywall

Drywall is not only dry, it also acts like a sponge, which means it will wick water high up into the walls where you can't see it because it's covered by paint. The paint also acts as a protective barrier that will keep air from being able to dry out the drywall. Drilling holes in the bottom of the drywall allows air to get inside the walls and dry out the drywall from the side that is not covered by paint. Drilling the holes in the bottom of the drywall also means they will be covered up once you replace the baseboards.

  • Spray A Strong Disinfectant On The Walls

Mold, mildew and bacteria thrive in moist environments. To make sure that you do not have long-term mildew damage, be sure and spray any carpets and walls with a strong disinfectant or anti-bacterial spray. Also keep in mind that many insurance companies will cover flood recovery, but they will not cover mold and mildew damage, since that should have been taken care of in the initial recovery. This is something to consider when deciding whether or not to call in pros to recover from flood damage.

  • Set Up Industrial Fans, Industrial Dehumidifier, & Crank Up The Heat

While regular household fans might be enough to create a cool breeze, they are not powerful enough to create a strong enough wind current to climb up high into your walls. Heat will help water evaporate, and dry air will absorb the water as it evaporates, but you have to then remove the water from the saturated air so it will absorb more moisture, which you do with the dehumidifier. You want to keep doors and windows tightly sealed during this process, so you may want to leave the house while the heat and fans do their work.

Water in your home will create damage if left standing long enough but water in your business has the potential to create even more damage due to the presence of more electronics. For water in your business, you will most likely want to call in the pros to do the water cleanup. Even in your home, however, water cleanup from flood damage can be pricey even if you do all the work yourself. The cost of renting industrial fans and an industrial dehumidifier might be comparable to hiring professionals to do it for you and you can be sure if you hire professionals that it is done properly and does not result in even costlier mold damage.

Water Damage Comes In Many Classifications

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Rely on SERVPRO of Marietta West to Restore Your Home After a Water Intrusion or Leak

Damage from water can occur from different sources throughout your home. Your kitchen can develop a leak in a water hose leading from a dishwasher or a kitchen pipe under the sink. Your washing machine can overflow, etc. Many people believe that the water caused by these instances is clean, but the EPA reports that “clean water” can carry unhealthy bacteria. Other causes of damage can also be caused by a leaking room, bad weather, or cracks within the foundation.

Water damage is classified into four different classes for proper treatment. If you experience water damage in your Marietta, GA home, restoration experts can determine what is needed in the clean-up efforts. The classification of water damage is based on the effects of the water, the rate of evaporation, and how much moisture is absorbed by the materials in the area. All four classifications involve the following information:

Class One is the least harmful. This damage affects only part of a room, with materials that include particle board, plywood, structural wood, vinyl composition tile, and concrete.

• Class Two has a fast rate of evaporation. This faster rate means that carpets and cushions are damaged. The seepage of water up a wall is less than 24 inches, and moisture is held within structural materials.

• Class Three has the fastest rate of evaporation. Damage may come from faulty sprinklers or other ceiling sources that can soak the walls, furniture, carpets, ceilings and the subfloor. A wide-spread water event.

• Class Four requires special water restoration and removal treatment. This classification affects flooring, plaster, stone, brick, crawlspaces, and concrete.

SERVPRO is a leading industry, water remediation service. For the safety of everyone in the home, it is important to distinguish which category of water damage you have. Restoration experts from SERVPRO offer removal services such as sewage clean-up, structure drying, water mitigation, contents inventory and cleaning. SERVPRO of Marietta West: Your Experts in Commercial Water Damage Restoration in North Georgia

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Handle Your Marietta Commercial Water Damage with SERVPRO of Marietta West

If you have recently become a victim of commercial water damage in Marietta GA, you may be wondering what you can do to mitigate your damages. There is a critical period in which certain actions must be taken to preserve as much of your property as possible and to decrease any health risks when water damage has occurred in a commercial space.

Preparing a Space for Water Damage Restoration

Before you enter your commercial space or any flooded building, you will need to make sure the electrical power to the structure is shut off. You should also be aware that during a flooding event, small animals or reptiles tend to seek shelter inside of buildings. Be prepared to deal with the discovery of wild animals in your space.

Protect yourself from entering any flooded building by wearing an organic vapor respirator. You can purchase these at any local paint and building supply stores. You also want to have rubber gloves, protective clothing, and eye protection. The first thing you should do is ventilate the affected areas by opening the windows and placing fans where possible.

Unfortunately, there likely will be items that you need to throw away. Any items that are porous and have absorbed contaminated floodwater cannot be restored. If your commercial space has drywall, mattresses, pillows, box springs, particle board, carpets or carpet pads, these will need to be discarded if they have become saturated. However, there is good news: If you have clothing or household fabrics that can be machine-washed, you may be able to salvage them. Use your washing machine to clean these items with a 10-minute soak at the minimum in hot water with detergent. The soap and normal wash should remove most of the contamination and any staining that is present.

Be aware that your commercial space will need a thorough professional inspection, cleaning and possibly restructuring. Water damaged walls and installations must be removed and repaired, and pockets of saturation should be exposed for drying and sanitizing. Always remember that mold growth could take a few days to appear as it thrives in a moist environment with organic-type materials such as paper or particle board and in temperatures that range between 60 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Keep good airflow throughout the interior environment, and maintain moderate temperatures to decrease the risk of any mold growth. It is also important that you let your space dry out before any rebuilding occurs.

Protecting Your Marietta Commercial Property From A Fire Loss

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

Commercial fires often are the most devastating real estate that a property owner will have to oversee. In addition to wreaking havoc on your property, fires can force you to relocate temporarily so you can maintain running your business while the restoration process is completed. However, property owners who implement high-quality safety practices can often avoid the devastation and destruction that results from commercial fires. Read the brief outline provided below to learn how you can protect your property:

  • Install Automatic Fire Sprinklers

As many authorities know, having an automatic fire sprinkler on your property can reduce the risk of fire by up to 71%. Additionally, sprinklers can decrease your insurance premium. To keep your sprinkler in excellent condition, be sure that it is not blocked by dirt or paint. Also, be sure to inspect regularly your main control valve so that it is not left off. Finally, be sure that you take the precautions necessary to prevent the pipe from freezing.

  • Conduct Fire Emergency Training

Each of your employees should undergo fire safety training. The training can help prevent your staff members from being victimized. Here are a few subjects that should be covered in the emergency training:

  • Hazard Recognition

Keep all combustible chemicals and materials away from heat-generating and electrical equipment.

  • Prevention

Inspect your power sources regularly and don't overload your extension cords and outlets.

  • Response

Teach your employees how to respond when a fire breaks out. Some subjects that should be covered include how to perform an organized evacuation, operate the fire extinguisher, and set the fire alarm.

Other issues that should be involved in the training include:

  • Breathing Apparatus Training
  • Fire Extinguisher Training
  • Confined Space Entry Training
  • First Aid Training
  • General Staff Emergency Awareness Training
  • Evacuation Exercise

Also, be sure that your employee team officials undergo the following fire emergency response training:

  • Fire Safety Officer Training
  • Fire Safety Adviser Training
  • Chief and Deputy Chief Warden Training
  • Emergency Control Organization Warden Training
  • Spill Response Training
  • Lay Flat Hose Training

Four Reasons You Should Always Seek Professional Fire Restoration Services For Your Marietta Home

10/23/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marietta West Can Restore Your Fire Damaged Marietta Property

Once your home in Marietta is hit by a fire, your top priority is getting your property cleaned and repaired. In many cases, this desire leads people to pursue DIY cleanup projects. If this were your planned methodology, you should reconsider this course of action. If the fire damage is of any consequence, many concerns need to be addressed. Can you do all of this yourself?

1. Water Removal: Standing water left behind the fire extinguishing efforts of the local fire department have several important ramifications. The resulting water damage can be furniture, electronics, clothing, drywall, ceilings, flooring, and more. Water removal must be done quickly. SERVPRO utilizes water pumps, wet-vacs, high-velocity fans and dehumidifiers to extract the water and moisture quickly thereby mitigating the damage. Fire damage unfortunately, has collateral damage.

2. Smoke Damage: The smoke damage that results from a fire can be quite substantive. In fact, the smoke left behind can become embedded in your furniture, flooring, carpets, and walls. If left unaddressed, this smoke damage can remain in your property for years. Soot, another by-product of specific fires, needs special attention for proper clean up to avoid staining of walls and furniture. Effectively removing smoke necessitates the use of professional procedures and products that fire restoration specialists from SERVPRO have in its arsenal.

3. Salvageable Goods: In many cases, homeowners who seek to complete the remediation process on their own will throw away items that are salvageable. Don't make this mistake. Instead, allow SERVPRO to assist you with this aspect of the restoration process. We will assess, inspect and issue you a Contents Claim Inventory Service form--CCIS. This inventories affected household items and classifies them into non-salvageable, salvageable or questionable lists. Items can be containerized and cleaned at our facility by our IICRC-trained technicians.

4. Time Efficiency: If you attempt to complete the fire restoration process without professional assistance, the project will take a lot of time and probably lack positive results. However, hiring SERVPRO to put your Marietta home back in repaired, healthy condition after fire damage enables you to feel confident of the restoration. Consider the effort, equipment, and training involved in successfully restoring your home to its pre-fire condition.

How to Inspect a Fire Extinguisher

9/29/2017 (Permalink)

In the event of a home fire get to safety immediately and call 911 - Then call SERVPRO of Marietta West

When was the last time you took time to check the fire extinguisher that sits under your kitchen sink? Or the one hanging from a dusty hook in your garage? If you’re struggling to remember, it’s time to check it. Like any other piece of safety equipment, a home fire extinguisher should be inspected regularly to ensure it’s in proper working condition. A fire extinguisher in good working condition is your first line of defense when a home fire erupts.

Ideally, you should inspect your portable home fire extinguishers every month.

Tips for Performing a Monthly Fire Extinguisher Check

  • Check the label or tag.

Every fire extinguisher, whether disposable or rechargeable, has a manufacturer’s label or tag. Read the tag and follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance suggestions.

  • Check the tamper seal.

If the tamper seal has been broken or is cracked, a disposable fire extinguisher needs to be replaced. If it’s rechargeable, it needs to be serviced professionally. Check the locking or pull pin as well to make sure it’s in the correct position. If the pin missing, the fire extinguisher needs to be inspected or serviced by a professional.

  • Inspect for physical damage.

Physically inspect the fire extinguisher for obvious damage. This may include but is not limited to dents, corrosion, cracks and obvious leakage. If a fire extinguisher has leakage, it’s no longer under full pressure and may not work properly when you need it most. Check the fire extinguisher nozzle as well, to ensure it’s not clogged by grime, dust, bugs or leakage from the unit itself.

  • Check the pressure gauge.

Check that the pressure gauge needle indicates the fire extinguisher pressure is in the optimum operating range. Often the correct pressure range will be designated by green on the gauge.

  • Is the fire extinguisher full?

During your monthly check, lift the fire extinguisher and determine if it still feels full. If there has been a leak, it will feel light, and it won’t have the right amount of pressure to work correctly.

  • Shake it.

If you have a dry chemical fire extinguisher, it should be shaken once a month during your inspection. This helps prevent the chemical dousing agent from solidifying at the bottom of the unit.

  • Write inspection date on tag.

Keep track of every inspection date by writing it on the fire extinguisher tag.

  • Ensure easy access to your fire extinguisher.

Fire extinguishers should always be easy to access if there is an emergency. You don’t want to have to search for it once a fire breaks out. Don’t block fire extinguishers with furniture, boxes or any other items. Everyone who lives in the household should know where the closest fire extinguisher is located and how to use it in case of an emergency.

In the event of a fire emergency, first make sure to get people safely away, then call 911. A home fire extinguisher can be used to put out or control small fires, but it’s still safest to call professional fire fighters before you attempt to control a fire on your own.

SERVPRO of Marietta West are Commercial Drying Specialists

9/20/2017 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Marietta West for all of you commercial water drying needs! -(770) 428-5467-

Our SERVPRO Franchise has taken the IICRC Commercial Drying Specialist (CDS) class and has obtained special certifications to complete water mitigation in commercial buildings. Drying out a commercial building can be much different than performing a dry out service for a residential home. The materials a commercial building and residential home is built of can be completely different. The buildings are also used for different purposes.

The CDS course is a five day class and covers commercial, industrial, institutional and complex residential structures. The class teaches students to become skilled at performing damage inspections and evaluations. The class covers workflow management, process administration and technical methods of effective and timely drying of commercial, industrial, institutional and complex residential water damaged structures, systems and furniture.

Commercial drying projects often have additional potential hazards and safety risks than residential water mitigation projects. According to the IICRC, potential hazards include but are not limited to higher voltages, confined spaces, energized machinery, hazardous chemicals, heavy equipment and forklifts. In addition to this information, it is important that state and local laws for safety and contractors are still followed.

If you are in need of having mitigation performed on a commercial or industrial building in the Kennesaw area, make sure you utilize a company that has the knowledge to perform the services properly and effectively.

SERVPRO Helps Prevent Fire in Your Marietta Home with Dryer Vent Cleaning

8/2/2017 (Permalink)

Protect your Marietta home from fire damage with dryer vent cleaning!

House fires affect millions of people every year at the cost of over $500 Million. Smoke detectors have proved their value every year, saving lives and homes from total loss. Most house fires start in the kitchen, but a significant number still occur in a place most forget about once the item is installed, the dryer vent.

A dryer vent cleaning cost may seem like an avoidable charge, but it is needed to prevent fire in your Marietta home. There are over 15,000 dryer fires each year, and the accumulated property damage cost exceeds $70 Million annually. SERVPRO has the personnel and equipment needed to keep you from adding to those numbers in the coming year. This vent cleaning can also reduce the workload of your clothes dryer while lowering energy usage.

A dryer inside the house or apartment uses a metal exhaust pipe (galvanized iron or steel usually) to vent hot air to the outside of the home. The zinc-coated material is designed to handle the highest dryer setting and more, but not open flames from burning, built-up lint. Since this is an exhaust pipe and smoke seeks the easiest access, a vent fire goes undetected by the smoke detectors much longer than a fire anywhere else in the house.

If your dryer is in the garage or under a carport, the chance for a major fire is reduced, but not eliminated. The flexible vent tube may not run under the house, but it is still at risk. The buildup of lint can still ignite, destroying your dryer and the washer next to it. As the flexible, plastic pipe melts, the burning material quickly ignites drywall and other building material. Worse, there is the possible loss of a car, boat, ATV or RV that might be parked next to the dryer as well.

Our SERVPRO technicians can eliminate this threat with an inspection. We can attach an air mover which introduces high-velocity air flow into your vent for just a few minutes. If the build-up has caked against the sides of the pipe, they use a brush with a telescoping handle to scrape the sides and then reattach the air mover to blow the lint outside your home. For a flexible conduit, we detach it from the dryer and clean it outside using either an air mover or your own garden hose to wash it out.

The cost for vent cleaning is minor compared to other restoration and cleaning work. It is significantly cheaper than removing fire damaged drywall and cleaning smoke and soot covered property. If you need our services or would like an inspection...

The Mold Mitigation & Remediation Process

6/12/2017 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Marietta West for mold mediation! (770) 428-5467

When there’s a water intrusion, like a roof leak or leaking water line, mold can quickly become a problem in your home or business. Mold can affect your health and can also cause significant damage to your property. Fortunately, SERVPRO of Marietta West professionals have the training, protective gear, and specialized equipment necessary to handle your mold problem. Although every mold damage scenario is different, requiring a unique solution, the general mold remediation process stays the same. The following steps illustrate a “typical” mold removal process.

The mold cleanup and restoration process begins when you call SERVPRO of Marietta West. A representative will ask a series of questions to help determine the necessary equipment, resources, and personnel needed.

  • Inspection & Damage Assessment

Your property will be carefully inspected for signs of mold using technology designed to detect mold and hidden water sources. Mold feeds on cellulose and water which can be hidden from plain view.

  • Mold Containment

Various containment procedures will be placed to prevent the spread of mold and isolate the contaminated area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to keep the mold spores from spreading during the cleanup process.

  • Air Filtration

Specialized filtration equipment captures microscopic mold spores out of the air. SERVPRO® technicians utilize powerful air scrubbers and HEPA vacuums to prevent the spread of these mold spores while the mold remediation is in progress.

  • Removing Mold & Mold-Infested Materials

The mold remediation process depends on the amount of mold growth and the types of surfaces on which the mold appears. Antifungal and antimicrobial treatments will be used to eliminate mold colonies and help prevent new colonies from forming. Removing and disposing of mold-infested porous materials, like drywall and flooring, may be necessary to remediate heavy mold growth.

  • Cleaning Contents & Belongings

SERVPRO of Marietta West professionals clean your furniture, decorative items, curtains, and other restorable items affected by mold. They use a variety of cleaning techniques to clean and sanitize your belongings. They are also trained to remove odors and deodorize using fogging equipment.

  • Restoration

Depending on the level of mold damage, drywall, subfloors, and other building materials may be removed. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet, or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

SERVPRO of Marietta West professionals understand mold and mold growth and have the training and equipment to remediate mold in your home or business.

Do You Have Dirty Ducts?

5/25/2017 (Permalink)

Improve your indoor air quality with duct cleaning?

Did you know your ventilation system is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality? In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without much attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home. A routine part of SERVPRO of Marietta West's service is inspecting the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping the HVAC and ductwork clean can potentially extend the life-span of the equipment by allowing it to operate at peak condition, which may help save you money. Duct cleaning may not always be necessary.

In some circumstances, such as after a fire, smoke, or suspected mold growth, duct cleaning becomes an essential part of the cleanup process. In these cases, SERVPRO of Marietta West can often restore the HVAC system and ductwork to pre-damage condition.

If you have a fuel-burning furnace, stove, or fireplace, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends they be inspected for proper functioning and be serviced before each heating season to protect against carbon monoxide poisoning.

The SERVPRO® Duct Cleaning System is proven and cost-efficient. Unlike the majority of duct cleaning services, SERVPRO of Marietta West uses a portable ventilation and air duct cleaning system to examine ductwork and make a clean sweep, removing years of dust and grime.

  • The process begins by using patented equipment, including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct’s shape and diameter while traveling through the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.
  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97 percent of the particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the indoor environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

For more information on duct cleaning, or to schedule an appointment, contact SERVPRO of Marietta West today. -(770) 428-5467-

Does Your House Have A Mold Issue?

5/15/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Marietta West's highly trained mold remediation technician.

Is your property winter ready?

12/16/2016 (Permalink)

Cold weather can have a huge impact on your home or business if you are not properly prepared. Whether it is heavy rain, freezing temperatures, damaging winds, sleet or snow, all can cause serious and costly property damage. While you cannot control the weather, you can take steps to prepare and help take the sting out of winter weather.

To help prevent costly damages due to weather, consider taking the following precautions to protect your property before colder weather hits.

  • Check your business property for downed tree limbs and branches. Weather, such as wind, heavy rain, ice and snow, can cause branches to fall, which could cause damage to the property and potentially cause personal injuries.
  • Roofs, water pipes and gutters should all be inspected to ensure they are in proper order. Gutter downspouts should be directed away from your building. Clear gutters of debris that may have gathered during fall. Leaves and other obstructions can lead to a damming effect, that can lead to roof damage and interior water problems.
  • Inspect property, especially walkways and parking lots, for proper drainage to alleviate flood hazard potential.
  • Inspect all handrails, stairwells and entryways to address and correct potential slippery of hazardous areas. Install mats or non-slip surfaces and post caution signs where water could be present.
  • Protect water pipes from freezing by simply allowing water to drip when temperatures dip below freezing. If pipes are under a cabinet, leave the cabinet doors open allowing warm inside air to circulate around the pipes. If the building has outdoor faucets, concider shutting water off at the main valve in the basement or crawl space. Once the valve is off, open the outdoor faucet to ensure tit drains, preventing any remaining water from freezing in the pipe.
  • Ask SERVPRO of Marietta West -(770) 428-5467- about completing an Emergency READY Profile (ERP) for your business. The ERP is a no cost assessment to your facility, and provides you with a plan to get back in business fast following a disaster.

When winter weather strikes, call SERVPRO of Marietta West -(770) 428-5467- to strike back.

From The Ordinary To The Unhealthy

Fungi and mold naturally occur in our environment. In fact, over 100,000 kinds of fungi have been identified. Fungi produce some very useful results. Yeast is a type of fungi used in preparing breads, baked goods and other food products, including some alcoholic beverages. the unique flavor of blue cheese is a result of mold. An edible mushroom is simply a type of fungi, and lifesaving penicillin is a product of mold (Penicillin chrysogenum).

Even though some forms of mold can add value to our lives, other forms can be harmful. Excessive amounts of mold. different types of mold, and/or exposure to molds may present health concerns for some people.

Intrusion of water into your home or place of business can result in mold growth. Water intrusions can result from storm damage, plumbing or equipment failures, long-standing leaks and poor humidity control. When water intrusions are not addressed right away, the resulting damage can present increased risk of harmful mold growth. Some amount of mold spores are normally present in most environments. If the humidity and moisture levels in a water-damaged environment are not promptly returned to normal, mold spores may grow and multiply. Organic materials found inside a building, such as wood, paper, drywall and insulation, provide food sources for mold to flourish. Excessive mold can lead to indoor environmental conditions that pose a health threat.

Did you know there is actually a science behind the process of drying?

10/24/2016 (Permalink)

Having the knowledge of psychrometrics in essential to restoring a water damaged structure to its pre-loss condition. While your initial reaction may be to grab a few towels to mop up the mess and place a fan or two around the damaged area, SERVPRO of Marietta West Professionals are trained in the science of drying and follow strict industry-approved standards to help lower the chances of any secondary damages. If your business suffers a water damage, SERVPRO of Marietta West Professional will:

  • Inspect the building to detect every component that is wet, to help prevent secondary damage from happening.
  • Measure how much moisture is in wet materials and monitor whether the materials are drying properly.
  • Speed up Mother Nature by using professional drying equipment.

What exactly does it mean to help "speed up Mother Nature"? A wet building can often dry naturally because the environment always seeks equilibrium. When materials are wet, moisture will naturally move to drier air at the surface of the material-but only if the air is, indeed, drier. The only problem is, nature takes too long and secondary damages may occur while the building is drying out.

SERVPRO of Marietta West Professionals have the tools and equipment to help dry hardwood floors, tough-to-reach spaces inside walls, and much more. SERVPRO of Marietta West Professionals also use state-of-the-art monitoring equipment, and a proven scientific process to help speed the drying of your home or business.

The Bottom line? SERVPRO of Marietta West Professionals have the training and equipment to help make water damage "Like it never even happened."

A clean environment is a healthy environment! Improve your living and work spaces this spring. SERVPRO of Marietta West have the tools to make your home or business sparkle in on time!

Quick Workspace Tips:

  • Divide Your Workspace Into Zones: Determine how you want and need to use the space and set up zones for your daily functions. You may require a workspace for your computer, a library area for our research, a storage area for supplies and a filing area for your archives. This will provide a foundation for a more efficient use of space.
  • Keep Only What You Need At Arm's Length: Boxes of pens, stacks of papers and old coffee cups need to go. Rid your desk of visual clutter by paring down the items on top to the essentials only. Supplies, paperwork and personal items should be kept in the zones you've established for them.
  • Sort Your Catch-All Drawer: Use drawer dividers to give everything a place, like compartments for paperclips and rubber bands. Go through the draw every six weeks and clear out anything that is out of place or isn't being used.
  • Eliminate Digital Clutter: Digital clutter can be just as stressful as physical clutter. Organize digital files and your e-mail inbox just as you would paper files-with a system of logical and clearly labeled folders. Also, keep the icons on your desktop to a bare minimum, and trade in sticky notes on your monitor for calendar reminders.

10/17/2016 (Permalink)

Your preparedness kit should last you at least three days.

It is no secret that many families and individuals are looking to cut back on spending. But with the frequency of disasters, both natural and man-made, can you afford no to be prepared? Preparedness doesn't have to cost an arm ad a leg. Here are a few tips:

  • Make a Plan. Work with your family and neighbors to make an emergency plan for the types of disasters that affect your area. Make sure everyone in your family understands where to go and what to do in case of an emergency. You can download Family Emergency Plan templates www.ready.gov/make-a-plan
  • Update Contact Information. Having accurate records for family, friends and neighbors will help you stay in contact and possibly help those in need. Make sure updated contact information is posted in visible places throughout your house and workplace.
  • Check Your Policy. Review your insurance policy annually and make any necessary changes - renters, too! When disaster strikes, you want to know that your coverage will get you back on your feet.

  • Plan your Purchases. You can save money by thinking ahead. Don't buy preparedness items just before the storm when they're expensive and supplies will be in high demand. Buy items at the end of the season when you can get good deals.
  • Make Sure it Keeps. Store water in safe, containers. you Don't need to buy expensive bottled water, just make sure your water containers are disinfected and airtight
  • Trade a Night Out. Trade one night out to fund your 72-hour kit. Taking a family of four to the movies can cost upwards of $80. Just one night staying in could fund your ready kit.

*The best tip: Start now. Take small steps toward preparedness and before you know it, you will be ready.

FEMA Emergency Supply List

10/17/2016 (Permalink)

Through its "Ready Campaign", the Federal Emergency Management Agency educates and empowers Americans to take some simple steps to prepare for and respond to potential emergencies/natural disasters. The "Ready Campaign" asks individuals to do three key things: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.

All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time.

Storm Team ready to tackle a job.

How quickly your company can get back to business after a tornado, hurricane, or flood often depends on the emergency planning done today. The regular occurrence of natural disasters demonstrates the importance of being prepared for any emergency. While each situation is unique, your organization can be better prepared if you plan carefully, put emergency procedures in place, and practice for all kinds of emergencies. The following are basic measures business owners and managers can take to begin preparing. A commitment to being planning today will help support your employees, customers, the community, local economy, and even the country. It also protects your business investment and gives your company a better chance for survival.

  • Develop a Business Continuity Plan - Your organization's risk needs will vary depending on the specific industry, size, scope and location. Begin by reviewing your business process flow chart, if one exists, to identify operations critical to survival and recovery. Carefully assess your internal and external functions to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating. You should also establish procedures for succession of management.
  • Review Insurance Coverage - Inadequate insurance coverage can lead to major financial loss if your business is damaged, destroyed or simply interrupted for a period of time. Insurance policies vary; check with your agent or provider about things such as physical losses, flood coverage and business interruption. Understand what your policy does and does not cover
  • Prepare Your Emergency Plan - Your employees and co-workers are your business' most valuable asset. Communication is central before, during and after a disaster. Include emergency information is newsletters, on your company intranet, in periodic employee e-mails and/or other communication tools.
  • Practice the Emergency Plan - Some disasters will require employees to leave the workplace quickly. The ability to evacuate workers, customers and visitors effectively can save lives. If you business operates out of more than one location, establish evacuation procedures for each individual building. If your company is in a high-rise building, an industrial park, or even a small strip mall, it is important to coordinate and practice with other tenants or businesses to avoid confusion and potential gridlock.
  • Secure Your Facility and Equipment - Install fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and detectors in appropriate places. Secure all entry and exit points and plan for mail safety. Plan what you will do if your building, plant or store is not usable. Secure valuable equipment.
  • Improve Cyber Security - Protecting your data and information systems may require specialized expertise, but even the smallest business can be better prepared. Use anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date. Don't open e-mails from unknown sources. Use hard-to-guess passwords. Protect your computer from intruders by using firewalls. Back up your computer data and download security protection updates known as patches regularly.

Kitchen Fire

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Ceilings, walls woodwork, carpeting , and floors will often need a thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until SERVPRO of Marietta West arrives. • If electricity is off, empty freezer/refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/bathroom faucets, trim and appliance, then protect these surfaces with light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Change HVAC filters; leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

Can you do it in under 2 minutes?

10/11/2016 (Permalink)

Fire Safety

Every second counts during a fire. Fire experts agree, people have as little as two minutes to escape a burning home before it's too late to get out. In a matter of moments, a small flame can become a major fire, making it critical to be prepared and have an escape plan in place. A survey conducted by the American Red Cross shows only 26 percent of families have developed and practiced a home fire escape plan. Once a plan is developed, it is critical everyone in the home understands the plan; the best way to do this is by practicing the escape plan at least twice a year. Increase your chance of surviving a fire by ensuring you have working smoke detectors in place, building an escape plan, and then practicing the escape plan. The following are a few suggestions to help you develop an emergency escape plan.

  1. Draw a map of each level of your home and show all doors and windows. find to ways to get out of each room. Make sure all doors and windows that lead outside open easily.
  2. Consider escape ladders for sleeping areas on the second and third floors. Only purchase collapsible escape ladders evaluated by a recognized testing laboratory. Store them near the window where they will be used.
  3. Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to make the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
  4. Teach children how to escape o their own in case you cannot help them. Pla for everyone in your home with special considerations for elderly or disabled individuals.
  5. Practice your fire escape plan during the day and at nighttime.

Helpful Tips to Keep Your Home and Family Safe from Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

9/19/2016 (Permalink)

Be sure to check your carbon monoxide detectors when you check your fire detectors.

Carbon monoxide is often call “The Invisible Killer”. It is an odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (including: wood, natural gas, gasoline, propane, methane, and oil) burn inefficiently. Carbon monoxide is particularly dangerous because it can be a bi-product of using many household heating or cooking devices. It can be ingested into your body by simply breathing. Carbon monoxide poisoning is often times confused with flu symptoms, food poisoning and other illnesses. Some symptoms include: nausea; shortness of breath; dizziness; light headedness; headaches (any combination of these symptoms). High levels of carbon monoxide can be fatal.

  • Carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards.
  • For the best protection, interconnect all carbon monoxide detectors throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for placement and mounting height.
  • Choose a carbon monoxide detector that has the label of a recognized testing laboratory.
  • Call your local fire department’s non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the carbon monoxide detector sounds.
  • Test carbon monoxide detector at least once a month; replace them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If the audible trouble signal sounds, check for low batteries. If the battery is low, replace it. If it still sounds, call the fire department.
  • If the carbon monoxide detector sounds, immediately move to a fresh air location outdoors or by an open window or door. Make sure everyone inside the home is accounted for. Call for help from a fresh air location and stay there until emergency personnel.
  • If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage immediately after starting it. Do not run a vehicle or other fueled engine or motor indoors, even if garage doors are open. Make sure the exhaust pipe of a running vehicle is not covered with snow.
  • During and after a snowstorm, make sure vents for the dryer, furnace, stove, and fireplace are clear of snow build-up.
  • A generator should be used in a well-ventilated location outdoors away from windows, doors and vent openings.
  • Gas or charcoal grills can produce carbon monoxide — only use outside.

SERVPRO of Marietta West Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/16/2016 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.

  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.

  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry.
